Aisian Beetle that has just been found in MN. #700631

Asked July 14, 2020, 11:19 AM EDT

I just heard that there is an Asian beetle that has recently been found in MN that is invasive to Hostas and Lillie's.  I do not know the name of this new import.    As I have just planted a new large shade garden with mostly those plants and I am concerned.  What can you tell me about the insect?   After having the yellow bags last year to try to save plants from the Japanese beetle (and learned what a horrible experience that is), I removed most flowers and plants they are attracted to trying deter them from my yard.  (Which has been pretty much successful)  Seeing as how there is another invasive insect that will now enjoy my new plantings I would like more information so I can make an informed decision as to  what my options are.

Expert Response

As I understand, the lily beetle has only recently been found in Minnesota and is not widespread. It has only been found in one garden in St. Paul. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is asking homeowners to be vigilant and report any insects found so they can get a better idea of spread. Please use the Arrest the Pest page on the MDA's website if you see any: https://www.mda.state.mn.us/plants-insects/arrest-pest

Based on the information provided on the MDA website*, it was first introduced in North America in 1940. It took 80 years to show up in Minnesota. Things we can do to slow the spread of insects like this is to thoroughly inspect new plants - especially if they are from an area where we know the insect has been discovered, even better is to not trade plants with friends in affected areas. Nurseries and garden centers are typically more controlled sources for new plants.

Here is the email alert that just sent yesterday about the lily beetle: https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/MNMDA/bulletins/2956960

Be aware, there are other red insects that have similar body types that are important parts of our ecosystem. The lily beetles are a bright shiny red.

If you already pulled plants from your garden, I would encourage you to replace them with native plants, looking at the list of plants that the lily beetle eats, not many of them appear to be natives. Native plants will bring you beneficial insects that will snack on less desirable insects, as well as wildlife that will eat an overabundance of insects as well.

Thank you for your quick response and good information. It is very helpful information for me and I will make good use of it. Happy to learn that daylilly is not on it's menu, as I do have them in my garden. I have removed grapes, raspberries, hydrangea, and other plants that the Japanese beetles are very fond of.  I will keep the Hosta I have planted and be vigilant for any sign of the lily beetle.
Thank you,
Gloria K
