Rising Sun Redbud #682606

Asked March 04, 2021, 8:48 AM EST

I planted the above tree last may. I’m worried that it may be dead this spring, for I see no buds yet. When do they appear? Should I be concerned. The tree is about 20 ft. High.

Hi Franklin County, As I'm writing this I can see from the window that our Redbud is not budding or showing any signs of life.  This is way too early for buds to open on a redbud.

People in the plant industry have a way to calculate the Growing Degree Days for a particular area of the US.  A growing degree day is defined as several hours above a certain threshold where most temperate biological events occur.  We use 50 degrees Fahrenheit as the base line.  So we calculate a growing degree day as one where the temperature went above 50 degrees.  There is more to the math than this but you can Google "Ohio GDD, edu" and a site will come up with how many growing degree days we have had so far.  We have not had very many although we can see the first things to bloom such as the Silver Maple opening buds and some even blooming.

The first bloom of redbud is at 191 GDD.  The weather will have to get considerably warmer and stay that way for awhile.  You can also check different stems on the tree to see if there is life still in the tree.  Take your thumbnail and scratch a spot on a twig and see if there is green under the bark.  If there is, then the tree is still alive and getting ready for spring.  Patience!  Don
