Can you identify and advise on how to control this plant that covers the ground and climbs trees on my property?

The plant that you have is winter creeper euonymus a species of spindle trees. It is also known as: fortunes spindle, spreading euonymus, japanese euonymus, climbing euonymus. If you use herbicides you should first cut the plant back as far as you can and then treet the fresh cut with a herbicide. If you go to the website: gardeningknowhow.com and go to the search box at the top and type in winter creeper control and scroll down to euonymus winter creeper management:tips for controlling it will give you tips for controlling wintercreeper. Thanks for your question
