Jade plant troubles #682517

Asked March 03, 2021, 2:09 PM EST

I have a Jade plant that I've had for over a decade. This winter it has started to have some of the smaller branches shrivel and fall right off of the plant. The branches that fall off have leaves that look normal and don't appear desiccated themselves. The plant as a whole looks healthy. I let it dry out quite a bit between waterings in the winter. It's in a southern window and gets some direct sunlight each day. I have had spider mite problems on various houseplants this winter which I try to tackle fairly quickly. Any idea what would cause this? Thank you!

The branch loss can be due to a number of factors, including over- or under-watering, insufficient light, cold temperatures and leaf shining products.    Also check the root system.  If your plant is ten years old, the root system may be taking up all of the space in the pot, not allowing for soil to nurture it.  If this is the case, transfer it to a larger container and add more soil.  Watering may also be an issue.  Check the soil to make sure the plant is receiving enough water, but of course not enough that the roots are sitting in moisture. Water the plant whenever the top inch of the plant is dry. Look also for an infestation of mealy bugs and scale insects. These can cause leaf drop and deformed leaves. Treat them by dabbing them with a paintbrush or cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol. Moving the plant to a place with a drastic temperature difference can also cause leaf drop; the plant will adapt to the new locaton after awhile and the leaves will grow back.

Hopefully, you'll identify the appropriate problem from this list of possibilities and nurture your jade plant back to vigorous life.
