Kitchen bugs #682512

Asked March 03, 2021, 1:53 PM EST

We have little tiny bugs (beetle like) that keep appearing on the floor by our wooden cabinets. We have tried many different sprays and mothballs with no success. I can send a picture if possible. Thanks so much. Hope you can help

We would be happy to help. Please send us photos of the insects you are seeing. Take close photos that are in focus, ideally in good natural light so we can see the details of the body parts. If you can place a ruler or coin next to the insect(s), that will give us an indicator of the size. You can upload photos to this question and we will have an entomologist take a look.

Hi Dorothy,

It appears from the picture that you have varied carpet beetles.  These are common household pest. They do not bite, sting or transmitted any disease. While the adults feed on pollen the larva have been know to feed on many other items composed of wool, fur, felt, silk, feathers, skins, and leather. Dry food and pet food can also be a common source of infestation. Here are some tips for preventing and controlling them in your home.

- Insecticides alone they will not effectively manage carpet beetles and should only be used in combination with good housekeeping practices. If using a insecticide always read and follow the label.

- Susceptible items should be dry-cleaned or laundered before being stored for long periods. They should be stored in tight-fitting plastic bags or containers.

- Thoroughly clean the home when carpet beetles are detected. Pay particular attention to areas where lint and pets hair accumulates. Thorough vacuuming of carpeting, along baseboards, under furniture, and in closets is recommended. Dispose of vacuum cleaner bag outdoors.

- Treat infested objects to kill eggs and larvae. Store small items in a freezer for 48 hours or heat-treat them at temperatures above 120 degrees F for several hours. Remove and destroy heavily infested material when you find it.

- Exclude adult beetles during warm months by using screens and sealing other openings.

- Several over-the-counter insecticides registered for use inside homes can be applied in storage areas, edges of carpeting, baseboards, cracks and crevices to help control these pests. Great care should be taken when using these products in the home, as some maybe toxic to pets and people is missed used.  Be sure to read and follow all the instructions and safety precautions found on the pesticide label before using any pesticide.  Household “bug bombs” will not be effective against carpet beetles. In most cases, direct chemicals spray of clothing should be avoided.

Emily - Thanks so much for your information.   We are puzzled though as they appear in the kitchen under the cabinets.   There is no carpet there.  We completely cleaned out the kitchen cabinets and checked the flour and other dry foods and saw nothing. We will continue to get rid of them as they appear.

These bugs can appear anywhere. Carpets are not needed. I suggest you put white sticky traps, available on line, in areas where they are, and see which traps have the most. Then you can "triangulate" where they are coming from and seal any holes or clean the area.
