pre emergent crab grass preventer on fescue lawn planted last fall #681950

Asked February 26, 2021, 4:50 PM EST

I seeded my front yard with fescue last Fall of 2020. Can I use pre-emergent crabgrass control on it now, Spring of 2021? I read that pre-emergent can be hard on seeding and grass that is not with strong roots. What I don't know is whether or not I am considered to have strong roots on grass planted in the fall? In my backyard, I have Fescue Sod put down about 2 months ago. Can I use pre-emergent crabgrass control on it?

Expert Response

For the grass seed that was planted last fall, I am assuming you have a good stand from that planting? A good stand meaning you have cut it at least twice and it is still relatively green?  If so, you can put pre-emergent down on the area where you planted grass seed last fall. For the sod that was put down 2 months ago you can also fertilize that area. Please fertilize according to the application rate on the package.
