Timber Prices #681673

Asked February 24, 2021, 2:05 PM EST

I'm looking for current eastern Ohio timber prices. In particular, I have some hard/sugar maple and cherry tree/logs that were cut last month to clear electric transmission lines and towers on my property. Also if you can recommend any timber buyers in my area it would be appreciated. Thank you. Susan Green.

Thanks for your question.  OSU Extension publishes a timber price report semi-annually.

You will probably need to deliver the product to the mill, so you would use SAWLOG pricing.

I recommend measuring inside bark diameter, and length.  You can estimate board footage using this equation Doyle Log Rule:

[(diameter-4)x(diameter-4) x length]/16= board feet

Below is a directory of woods products companies.  Search for primary manufactures in you part of the state:  https://www.ohiowoodproducts.com/

I would recommend calling the potential buyers ahead to make sure they are interested in what you have to sell.

Thank you for the prompt and excellent reply. Using your link as well as searching online The most recent timber price report that I can have been able to find is August of 2020. Is the January 2021 report available yet? I know timber prices have increased and even substantially increased in most areas in the past year.

Thank you.

Yes, I've heard that log prices have increased recently.  I have not seen that report yet.  There is usually a delay of a few months before it is posted.  Kathy Smith (Smith<personal data hidden>) would know when it will be posted. These reports will give a rough estimate based on Doyle log rule and will only be a "ball park estimate"  the prices will vary greatly with log quality.   I recommend calling several potential buyers to get an estimate, but unfortunately you won't know the actual price until they see the logs. Length is very critical. Usually logs need to be 6 or more inches longer than standard lengths due to loss from trimming and checking (eg. 12'6 inches to make a 12 ft. log etc.)

I will send an email to Kathy Smith. Again I greatly appreciate your assistance as I navigate this. The largest tree cut was a sugar maple approximate 36 in in diameter. It has a 4-5-in hollow spot near one of the edges, but has a lot of beautiful wood. Two additional sugar maples are about 24 in in diameter and there is a black cherry that is 22 in. For more sugar maples are around 12 in diameter.  It hurt to see the big maple tree taken down.  There are additional mature trees on this part of my farm that I would look to selectively cut to make it more attractive to a timber buyer.  I wasn't planning to harvest them at this time, but I don't want to let what is cut to simply rot. I'm attaching a few of the pictures I snapped last weekend. The aggravating aspect of the situation is that an AEP contractor came in and cut the timber with notification or any communication with me. I simply found the recently cut trees middle of January, and only after diligent investigation gained admission of responsibility from AEP.
