24k gold #681580
Asked February 23, 2021, 6:35 PM EST
I found this beautiful spent egg sac in my basement. It was too tiny to attract an autofocus phone camera's attention but is intricately detailed. Can you identify the species? Thank you.

Kristi,
I'm not sure if he can help as the photo is a bit fuzzy, but Jeff Whitworth, one of our entomologists would be your best bet. See https://entomology.k-state.edu/people/faculty/Whitworth-Robert-J-Jeff.html for contact info.

Better pictures! And UNOPENED sac! So please rush response if deadly... take your time if neighborly. It has been placed back in its web.

Send this to Jeff Whitworth as he is an entomologist. We used to have an entomologist whose job was to ID insects but that position was eliminated due to budget cuts. Jeff helps when he can. See above for contact info.

FOOL’s gold!! I think the “gilded egg sac” was a glittery piece of Christmas ornament that fell into a stairwell cobweb. And I texted it to my girls and my friends with the caption: PROOF! Mother Nature loves Bling!! Oh well, when you have time please forward my “WOKE” moment to the KSU expert.
Thank you,
Kristi Emerson

Great you figured this out!

LOL a little slow on the uptake, eh? That would have been a rather long and disappointing vigil to see what hatched. I do admit to being blonde where my grays used to be.
HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY!
Thank you for all you do,
Kristi
