Tree identification for my brother's friend? #680150

Asked February 05, 2021, 10:57 AM EST

A friend of my brother, residing in Maryland (I don't know what county he is in and chose one off the list), reached out to me wondering what type of tree this might be. I tried to do some diagnosing and couldn't identify it. Please see the attached images. Apparently the wood from this tree was not able to be split, it was about 50 feet tall and the diameter of the trunk was about 18". I have an additional image that I will send through an additional letter of the sprouts that came up from the stump. Thanks for whatever help you can give me!

Please see the previous submitted question with the same title. Here is the additional image of the sprouts that came up this past summer after the tree was cut down. Thanks so much for any help you can give me!

We tend to think it is either a Nyssa Sylvatica (Black Gum), which can be difficult to split, especially if dried, or Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana). Both are native.

A more definitive key is the inner pith of year old twigs: both have diaphragms but persimmon has hollow chambers between those while it is solid for Nyssa.
