Is this privet? #679753

Asked January 31, 2021, 11:32 PM EST

Is this privet in the attached images of leaves and bark? The leaves are much smaller, softer, and wavier than I expected for privet. The images were all taken in late January, and I have only owned this property since October. I’ve seen no signs of flowers or berries from October to present on this 6’ bush, and the leaves were a brighter green in the Fall. If privet, are there any best practices for removal to prevent spread?

Expert Response

There are multiple types of privet, Japanese, Chinese, and common privet....all have similar characteristics but fall within the same Genus.  The privet you are showing looks to be common privet.  (softer leaves, opposite leaf arrangement).  There are some 'look a like' plants but they don't have the same lintcles that are common on privet.

Here is a link that may be helpful.  It discusses control methods.    https://projects.ncsu.edu/goingnative/howto/mapping/invexse/privets.html

Cultural control (pulling the whole plant or digging it up) is the best method assuming it is not massively occupying acres of your land.

Chemical control is another option.  I recommend you read the link and decide if the recommendation is adequate for your application.  If not, contact your local extension agent in Mecklenburg, NC  Steve Capobianco is your Ag Agent.  He can provide you with a basal treatment recommendation if your infestation is too large for control with cut and paint options.
