What is the likelihood that Cicada nymphs will emerge from areas where soil has been distributed by large scale housing construction? New plantings - trees and shrubs - have been put in during the past few months. Thank you, Marsha Baltimore County Master Gardener

Chances are if the soil has been disturbed or distributed (soil being brought in) on a large scale in a new housing development you may not have much of an issue. You may be able to get more of an idea later in the season on specific areas/sites. 

However, it may be a good idea to be proactive and protect your small or newly planted trees and shrubs. Cover them with plastic mesh (

Please see our cicada webpage above for information and materials used for  covering the plants. The netting will have to be secured to the ground with bricks, rocks, or landscape pins.
