Good afternoon,
What do you suggest I do to protect a recently planted young redbud from cicada damage this spring?
Should I wrap the trunk in some kind of protective cover? Made of what?
Thanks,
Susan

- Small ornamental trees such as your redbud may be protected by covering with plastic mesh (https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/cicada

Thank you. What size mesh? Alternatively I wondered if any other material would work, eg burlap? Tree wrap? I feel a little guilty using plastic mesh.
Thanks again,
Susan

Please see the above link for covering the plants. You can use a plastic mesh less than 1/2 inch openings sold in garden supply stores or a tulle fabric (sold in fabric stores). It can be draped over the plants and secured to the ground with rocks, bricks, or landscape pins.
