Soil Health & Conventional Farming Neighbors #679118

Asked January 13, 2021, 3:39 PM EST

I am moving into a small-scale growing area that is less than 10 ft from a conventionally planted area, would you have any suggestions on how I could best protect the soil (and crops) I am stewarding from their practices? I am considering the idea of trying wind break infrastructure via plants although that will take time to grow high enough to do its intended purpose. Would you have any other ideas? My friend suggested I try planting grapes along the edges of my area, as their leaves may show any uptake of potentially harmful chemicals from fertilizers, herbicides, etc the neighboring farmer may choose to use. My only other suggestion is that I contact the state chemist to find out what is known about the land neighboring where I will be practicing organically on. If you could direct me to any studies done about this kind of thing I'd be grateful for that too. Thank You, Faith Hunsberger
