Indoor Majesty Palm woes #679110

Asked January 13, 2021, 1:50 PM EST

I've been trying to revive my indoor majesty palm for over a montn now. I'd repotted and put fresh soil and water it, but I'm not sure if it's completely dead now. I didn't spot any root rot when repotting it so I don't want to do. I put some epsom salt in the soil to give it magnesium. I literally don't know what else to do to save it and I don't want to throw it out. It has one frond left that's hanging on for dear life.

Expert Response

Majesty palms (Ravenea rivularis) are slow growing tropical plants (trees actually, growing up to 90 feet) native to Madagascar and aren't easy to keep happy and thriving in our climate, especially in our dim winter light and very dry, forced heated air.

Most palms only produce one to three new fronds a year. Whether your remaining growth continues depends on whether the growing point (terminal bud) from which all leaves rise is still healthy. If it is damaged, the plant will eventually die.

Right now, it looks like it has a fighting chance. The green is needed for the plant to be able to photosynthesize.

It should be given the brightest light you can give it, including 3 hours of direct sun if you can manage that.

At this time of  year the palm is resting and need less water and no fertilizer than the brighter, warmer active growth period of summer. Try standing it in a saucer/tray of moist pebbles to increase humidity.

Good luck.

Christine
