While trying to cut off baby growths from a white flowering cactus( not blooming now) the "mother" plant split in half. The plant winters in the garage. What do i do now? Have i killed it?

Hi Pam,

Christmas cactus is a pretty tough succulent.  It is easily propagated by rooting cuttings.  Depending how you cut the plant it should be able to grow back.  You can root the portion of the plant that was cut off buy placing the segment in a moist peat and sand soil mix. Insert the segment about a quarter of its length below the soil surface. Place the pot in a well-lit area, avoiding direct sunlight.
Christmas cactus is a tropical plant, it enjoys average to high humidity with temperatures hovering between 60-70 F.  Apply a mild houseplant fertilizer every other week. Water and fertilize regularly in spring and summer; however, during the winter months, this plant should be kept on the dry side,  Don't winter your plant in the garage.  Leave the plant in the same location and reduce water after it's done blooming.
