Reseeding Fescue Lawn #679035

Asked January 12, 2021, 8:59 AM EST

Every year I pay to have my fescue lawn reseeded when it looks very thick and healthy to me. Is it really necessary to reseed every year? The companies say that fescue grass only lives one year and needs reseeding but mine looks very healthy and the reseeding does a lot of damage.

Expert Response

Your service is probably over-seeding which is a recommended practice in our area.  Fescue is a cool season grass and it is a challenge to grow this grass in the Richmond area.  We are in a transition area-too cold for warm season and too hot for cool season.  This is why it is recommended to over-seed the lawn.  If you did not over-seed, over time your lawn would begin to show signs of decline. In addition, to the over-seeding, your service is fertilizing in the fall and hopefully monitoring the pH level of the soil and adding lime if necessary. Maintaining a lovely lawn is an on-going process and it sounds as if your lawn is doing well.
