Irrigation and frost prevention #678967

Asked January 10, 2021, 2:35 PM EST

I want to direct sow flower seeds in a 50'x150' area. I want to get them in the ground as early as possible which means I will be risking a late frost. If I know I frost is coming what is the best (easiest, cheapest, reliable) method to do this? I was thinking of how orchards use irrigation. Any advice or thoughts? Thank you.

Hello,

Winter sowing is easy. Basically it is accomplished with soil, seeds, and containers. The best soil to use is an all-purpose potting soil. The containers can be sterile milk jugs, 2 liter bottles, restaurant/deli/bakery food storage etc. Using seeds like cold hardy annuals, and perennials indicated for your zone. Check the packets make sure they are “self-sowing, cold stratification, winter-grown. Once you have all your containers seeded and placed outside, they will start growing at their own pace.
