Mushy leaves on Philodendron Pink Princess. #678899

Asked January 08, 2021, 1:00 PM EST

Hello, I don’t know if you answer questions about house plants but I have two baby PPP plants that have been showing signs of some sort of leaf decay. The leaves are developing translucent spots that turn to mush when touched. I’m not sure what it is and I don’t know what to do about it but I don’t want it to spread to other plants if it’s something bad. Someone said it might be bacterial soft rot? If it is, is there anything I can do that doesn’t require destroying the plants?

Expert Response

Hi,

It appears that your PPP plant has Bacterial Blight Philodendron selloum.  Suggested management of bacterial blight is to avoid overhead watering. Remove infected leaves of plants not severely affected. Water in a manner that keeps the surfaces of leaves and petiole dry at all times.  There are several self watering systems that do not get the leaves wet or you can simply avoid the leaves when watering with watering can.  Attached is web page link for more information on philodendron diseases for your reference.
