Can I Grow Walla Walla Onions in Michigan Sucessfully #678811

Asked January 05, 2021, 9:17 PM EST

Hello, I recently purchased some Walla Walla seeds from Botanical Interest Seed Company. Can I grow this onion here in Michigan? Last year I grew some sweet Spanish onions from transplants from Hessels Nursery and they were very good. Will I have the same success with Walla Walla if I start the seeds inside? I prefer a sweet onion to a cooking type onion. Also, what is our "official" hardiness zone in Warren MI 5b or 6? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Pamela Franz

Expert Response

Thanks for the question.  Walla Walla is a long day onion which means that it is suitable for Michigan.  You should have good success in planting inside as long as your plants aren't exposed to light more that 10 to 12 hours per day.

Warren is considered zone 6B on the 2012 usda Hardiness Zone Map

I hope this is helpful,
