Expert Response

Hi- here are some of the tomato cultivars that UME Master Gardeners and staff have liked the best for canning. Paste-type tomatoes have more solids and less water than other types making them popular for canning:

Big Mamma, Amish Paste, Bellstar, Plum Perfect, Roma, and Gilbertie.

tomatoes are not needed for paste or sauce. I can whole tomatoes with their juice in pint & qt. glass jars. So, is there a recommendation for this type of tomato to grow for the Eastern Shore?

thank you

Hi- we don't have a list of cultivars that have been shown to be better for processing whole. Any firm, ripe tomato can be successfully canned.

The paste-type tomatoes are also good for canning whole.
