Why does she call 24/7? #676855

Asked October 30, 2020, 4:21 PM EDT

I have a guinea. Female hen. That calls out buckwheat, buckwheat, 24/7. Why? They were purchased at TSC, on August 17th, 2020. I bought their last 11. They were about a week old. And I already had an adult male. They get along perfect. But this one hen, it’s nonstop in her calling. I just don’t understand why??? I live on 25 acres. They have a large outdoor run 20 x 40 that connects to their indoor coop. I have not let them out to run the property yet. I don’t want them to all run away. So this spring. I will start letting them out. One at a time..........

Expert Response

The sound that your female is making is correct, females make a sound that is two syllable sound that sounds like "Buckwheat, Buckwheat".

So I imagine your question is why is it making that sound so much?

The Guineas we raise tend to make more sounds when they are penned up, rather than roaming free.  They seem to get more vocal when they are agitated or upset which might be the reason she is so vocal, but it is difficult to answer exactly  "why" she is doing that.  Make sure she is not sick or injured, otherwise it is difficult to answer.
