Here is comprehensive plant care. Please note that the graft site gets buried below ground. Bark compost is good protection as noted but must be removed in April so as not to cause mold or rot of the stem. I would add the protection of a rabbit cage to keep critters from eating the bark when forage gets scarce.
Although some people suggest cages of cloth to prevent sunscald or wind burn, I have found that to be more trouble than it worth. You are going to be pruning for shape in the spring anyway and that is a good time to remove dead tips. Roses are resilient if the base and main stem bark is kept alive.
