Sweet Gum Scale? #676383

Is this scale on the branches of my sweet gum tree? If I try to peel it off, it takes the bark off with it and exposes the wick underneath. How should I treat it?

Some juvenile trees may have branches that are covered with a characteristic corky projection and this is normal. However, we are not sure this is what is shown in the photo.  

No treatment is recommended.

We recommend that you monitor the growth of the tree next spring and you can send us more photos if you notice additional symptoms.
