Winterizing Strawberries and Asparagus #676365

Asked 2020-10-17 18:16:28

I planted asparagus and strawberries this Spring and the plants have all done well. The strawberries were everbearing and continued generating fruit until last week. I want to give the asparagus and strawberries the best chance of returning successfully next year. What should I do to winterize them? Peace - Jerry

Expert Response

Both should be mulched to protect the crowns over the winter.  Do not cut back.  You can use leaves or straw for mulch.  I used to just dump the leaves picked up and partially chopped by my mower as mulch.  It stays in place better than whole leaves. Remove in the spring.

That’s was I was planning on doing, but I was considering cutting back the asparagus.  Glad I didn’t choose to do that!
