Asked September 28, 2020, 12:59 PM EDT

Found this insect eating an apple at my orchard that had been pecked by a bird. Wanted to confirm what type of insect it might be. Its antennae tell me it is not brown marmorated stink bug but want to know what it is. I had captured it in ziplock but overnight it ate its way out of package and escaped. so i no longer have it for identification proposes.

Expert Response

Hello!

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension.

Here is the response submitted by an entomologist at the U of M....

This is not a brown marmorated stink bug.

It is a type of scarab: a chafer beetle in the genus Euphoria. Adults visit flowers (for pollen and/or nectar) and rotting fruit (like your apple).

Here’s a handy sheet to identify the brown marmorated stink bug.

Hope this helps.

Also..... There is no need for concern - these are native, common beetles.
