Request Help Developing a 6 Year Old Haralson Apple Tree #675652

Asked September 27, 2020, 7:37 PM EDT

Greetings - I'm hoping you'll give me a call<personal data hidden>, anytime) regarding these questions, as it would be easier to address in them in conversation rather than via email. Thanks for considering it. I have a handful of questions about my 6 year old haralson apple tree, including some concerns about it not being planted deep enough in the ground, white growth that looks like mold on the base of the tree (which should probably be below grade), and some "training a young apple tree" questions that were not covered by that section on this web site (great info there, but I have a few more questions about my tree). I have uploaded a few pictures in hopes they help. Thanks, -- Dave Downs Mobile:<personal data hidden>

Expert Response

Hello!

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension.

Based on the photos.....the apple tree is planted in an unsuitable location for apples. It is on the edge of a wooded area, so its roots are competing with large, mature root systems of other trees. That could be why the roots are growing above the soil surface - they're growing on top of other roots. It's also competing for sunlight with the other trees, which is why it is so tall and skinny.

The white mold may be a trunk disease, but a sample would have to be sent to the Plant Disease Clinic for diagnosis.

For over the phone assistance please call the Yard and Garden Answer Line at <personal data hidden>.

Hope this helps.
