Replace large invasive maple? #675546

Asked September 23, 2020, 1:45 PM EDT

Hi. Could you please advise me on whether or not to replace my Amur maple. It is a mature, healthy tree in our front yard in suburban St. Louis Park and provides lots of shade. However, I’m concerned because it is invasive. Tons of seeds end up on the street in spite of my trying to sweep them up. Also, there are so many of them in St. Louis Park, and given the climate crisis, is it useful and wise to remove it? I’m so torn. Please help me decide. Thanks Yvonne

Expert Response

First, these leaves do not look like Amur maple leaves but they are not clear enough on the tree to identify.  And the closeups are crinkled. See the following website to identify Amur maple:   https://extension.umn.edu/identify-invasive-species/amur-maple

If you still think you have an Amur maple, the following comments apply.  In a neighborhood that is not near a wild area, it is okay to keep the tree.  If it is causing problems in your yard and crowding other plants, then get rid of it.  If you are able to continue to deal with seeds and mow down or pull seedings in your yard, that is helpful.  The seeds that enter the drainage system are unlikely to ever sprout.

Thank you for your environmental awareness!
