Rose rosette - does our tree have this? Please help #674141
Asked August 07, 2020, 5:12 PM EDT
(I'm new to gardening, been doing it around 6 months now)
I purchased a rose tree 5 weeks ago.
We live in the UK. (I foget the name of the tree)
It has been sunny outside and this tree has got alot of new growth.
The new growth is all red and has alot of thorns on it.
From research it suggests that it could be rose rosette.
If it has this, is there a way we can fix it?
Or do we need to sadly remove it and bin it?
Please see attached photos, if they help.
It's just hard to capture on a photo.
Please please please help.

Greetings from Oregon on the west coast of the USA. The photos that you sent appear to be normal growth for a rose bush. Look at this page from University of Tennessee Extension on “Early Detection of Rose Rosette Disease”. Your rose doesn’t appear to have contorted leaves or flower buds, the thorns are not excessive, and the stems are not thickened. However, keep an eye on the growth to see that it doesn’t become like the cited examples.
In the UK, rose rosette is a reportable disease. This plant pest fact sheet from the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs contains more information on the disease as well as the details for contacting the APHA Plant Health and Seed Inspector.
