Unusual insect/bug #672928

Asked August 04, 2020, 5:11 PM EDT

Is there someplace to get help identifying an insect or bug? Noticed this 04Aug2020 in Clare county. It appears to be using leaf litter as camouflage. 1/4 inch or less across the "body", light green when turned over. Thank you.

Expert Response

You've found a bagworm, an insect whose larval stage travels with a protective case of leaf litter or other plant material. If there's only a single one on the tree, you can observe and remove to ensure it does not defoliate the leaves. If there are many, you may wish to refer to the following guide for control options: https://entomology.ca.uky.edu/ef440
