Bugs on my squash #670140
Asked July 28, 2020, 11:16 PM EDT
Greetings! Can you identify this bug and let me know if I should be worried? They seem to hang out in bunches on my spaghetti squash and yellow zucchini. The bugs are usually darker brown but more gray this year. How can/should I get rid of them? Thank you in advance for your help!

these are squash bug nymphs (babies) and there are terrible for your plants. The adult squash bug is flat-backed, brownish black, and measures about 0.62 inch long. Older nymphs are grayish white with black legs and antennae. Nymphs range from 0.19 to 0.5 inch long. Squash bugs feed primarily on squash and pumpkin. Adults and nymphs suck plant sap from the leaves and stems, causing wilting and death. Nymphs go through five molts before becoming adults in 4 to 6 weeks. There is only one generation per year.

Early detection of nymphs is important, as adult squash bugs are difficult to kill.
- Remove and kill nymphs and adults by dropping them into a pail of soapy water. This is effective only if a few plants are affected.
- Removal of squash bugs can be challenging because squash bugs hide under leaves and move quickly when disturbed.
- Crush eggs that are attached to the undersides and stems of leaves.
- Trap squash bugs by laying out boards or pieces of newspaper. Squash bugs will group under the boards at night, you can then collect and destroy them in the morning.
- Remove plant debris during the growing season, to reduce sites where squash bugs can hide.
- Clean up cucurbits and other plant matter in the fall to reduce the number of overwintering sites.
