Colorado blue spruce problem #669374

Asked July 27, 2020, 1:20 PM EDT

We have a few of these in our yard. This year we noticed that something is happening to the tips of the branches. It looks like something is eating them. The needles are gone. Only the tips are affected. I have attached close ups go the tips and a view of the whole tree. Please advise. Thanks. John Kraft , Republic, MI

Expert Response

Hmm... I'm stumped on this one.  It looks like to me like the aftermath of Pine Sawflys dining - but they got the wrong tree species!  I don't hit it's spruce gall.
Here is an article on spruce tree decline as info:

I going to suggest that you contact MSU Plant & Pest Diagnostics at: https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/ They can look over your photos by email  and if needed ask you to send in a branch sample for further analysis.  I'm sorry I could't give you an answer.
