American Beech Tree leaf problem #668533

Asked July 25, 2020, 12:10 PM EDT

There seems to be some sort of insect larvae infestation on our American Beech Tree. This is happening at the lower branch areas. Should we be concerned or do we need to take action? If yes, what should we do?

Prince George's County Maryland

Expert Response

This is the work of the Beech leaf miner.
It is seldom a serious problem.
To help trees better withstand the effects of defoliation, provide adequate water during the summer.  Healthy, vigorous trees are better able to withstand the effects of defoliation than are stressed trees.
