Tomatillo pest #666749

Asked July 20, 2020, 10:01 PM EDT

I have some worms eating my tomatillos. There is a perfectly round hole in the husk. When I open up the fruit, there is a worm inside eating it. I need to identify it and understand what to do to prevent future infestation.

Expert Response

Hello,

This looks like tomato fruitworm or the corn earworm (same thing, just two names). Here is a fact sheet from Utah State, which includes management strategies: https://utahpests.usu.edu/ipm/notes_ag/veg-tomato-earworm

If you decide to spray, spinosad or Bt can be effective. Both are organic options.
