calcium to counteract tomato blossom end rot and an all purpose fertilizer #664561

Asked July 15, 2020, 3:18 PM EDT

Two questions:

  1. I have tomato blossom end rot.  I understand supplemental calcium is helpful.  Could you please tell me what to  buy?
  2. There are frequently recommendations to fertilize garden or flower pots regularly.  What formula should I use?  Miracle Grow has an 24-8-16 that is supposed to be all purpose for gardens and flower pots??
Thank you for your help,

Hi Cindy,

While blossom end rot is caused by a calcium deficiency, it's really because when the fruit forms, water isn't available to push calcium throughout the new fruit development. Calcium is immobile. The better recommendation is to make sure that you're watering regularly and thoroughly.

With the hot temperatures, growing tomatoes in containers means that you'll need to water at least once a day, if not twice, depending on the size of the plant and the container. Watering in the morning is best so there is water available to the plants during the hottest part of the day.

As for fertilizer, yes, that will work! Just mix and apply according to the directions on the label. The frequency would also be on the label--usually it's every 10-14 days?
