Walking along Clear Creek this morning we saw bushes, some of which had this seed-like thing growing on them and some did not. Is it a parasite? Is it a seed or what? Just curious. Thank you.

What you saw are galls. They are usually formed by insects. They distort the look of the plants, but generally will not seriously damage the plants.
