White fungus on a maple tree #660091

Asked July 05, 2020, 6:35 PM EDT

There is white fungus growing on my tree and slowly expanding. I also noticed that there are less leaves growing on my tree this year, and some branches are drying out. Is that fungus causing the problem? Can my tree be saved?

Expert Response

Thank you for your question. The greenish structures in the middle photo is a lichen, a harmless growth regularly found on woody plants. The white entity matches no fungi growing on trees in your area (https://apps.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/deciduous/maple/branchesfungi.html). It maybe innocuous or an indication that the tree tissue under it has died, and is being decomposed. I suggest you contact your own county Extension service, where local staff can recommend a diagnostic plan. At a minimum, examination of the growth can be arranged, and a subsequent recommendation obtained. You can find your office here: https://cce.cornell.edu/localoffices Good luck!
