I've lived in this house for 32 years and somehow never connected that I had a berry bush (hundreds of them) in my backyard, until I decided to build a permaculture food forest back there. Can you tell me what this plant is, and if it is edible (the birds like it).

Expert Response
Hello Mary,
It appears that these may be chokecherry bushes from the appearance of the leaves, bark and berries. Chokecherries are dark red to purple when ripe and they are edible, but I would urge you to have them positively identified by bringing in a sample before consuming them. Our office is closed at present to walk-in clients who want their plants identified but we may be accepting samples before too long. You can check on the status of the office by calling 303.730.1920.
You might also be able to have a sample identified at your nearby independent garden center.
