Why are squash leaves yellowing? #658038

Asked June 30, 2020, 11:32 AM EDT

The leaves on my squash plant are yellowing. It's in a small vegetable garden next to a red rubin basil and a cucumber plant. The basil is being eaten by something (I'll send a separate question with those pictures), and the cucumber plant seems to be doing fine. I water it daily, mostly in the mornings. I fertilize once every two weeks with fish fertilizer. The zucchini is flowering and seems to be producing small fruits. I planted the plants about 6 weeks ago. Can you help me save my plant?

Expert Response

Hi- your squash plant is suffering. The leaves are under-sized. The leaf edges are brown indicating some type of burn injury (excess fertilizer salts) or root injury. The plant seems to be crowded and may not be receiving adequate light. Water only once or twice per week depending on rainfall. Water deeply around the plant base and try not to get leaves wet. Fertilizing every few weeks should not be needed if the garden soil is somewhat fertile and high in organic matter. We don't detect any insect or disease issues but are curious about the detritus on top of one of the leaves (upper left in photo).

The plant may return to more normal growth but if you have room you could sow more summer squash seeds through the end of July.
