Tiny ant control #657719

Asked June 29, 2020, 3:42 PM EDT

We would like some advice on how to control some very tiny ants on our outdoor areas. There are literally thousands. They are very tiny, about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch and appear to be brown or reddish brown. They are abundant on the asphalt pavement area of our driveway, and the adjacent area where a locust tree, walnut tree, and rose bushes are planted. They are also a lot in the large brick planter that is attached to the west side of the house, thickly covering the vinca flowers and foliage - and there have also been some much larger black winged ants. They seem to be most active in the hot afternoon and evening heat, then disappear later on the evening and morning. Simply standing or even walking on the driveway usually results in multiple very painful stings/bites. Weeding or landscape maintenance has become pretty unbearable.

Any recommendations on control would be most appreciated. We’ve tried a few over the counter products, but have been unsuccessful in controlling them. There is a limited selection to chose from in this small town, but could probably obtain a more suitable product if we know what to get.

I don’t think these are at all unusual ants, but the number of them and our inability to get them under control make them a definite nuisance.

Have you seen any ant mounds or colonies in turfed areas?  I ask this question because the painful bites and stings make me wonder about fire ants, although they  are not known from Colorado.
