Expert Response
Thank you for your question. Here are four possible causes of rose leaf curl:
1. Herbicide damage can cause cupped or curled leaves. If application of a herbicide such as glyphosate (Roundup) was made in the autumn, symptoms may appear in the spring. The plant should recover. Keep herbicides away from your roses.
2.
Botrytis blight is a fungus that causes the leaves to turn gray-brown and curl in toward the stem. Keeping the area clean is more important than anything else. Collect and
discard all fading flower blossoms and leaves. Provide good air
circulation, and avoid wetting the leaves when watering.
3. Powdery mildew, also a fungus, may cause affected leaves to curl before white sploshes appear on them. Water roses early in the day, provide good air
circulation, and avoid wetting the leaves when watering. Use a fungicide if necessary, carefully following the instructions on the container.
4. A virus called rose-leaf curl virus causes leaves to curl and to a yellowing of foliage. The virus is carried by a mite (Phyllocoptes fructiplilus) that also carries the rose rosette virus. There is no cure. It is best that you plant virus-resistant varieties.
