poppy buds turning black #654283

Asked June 22, 2020, 9:43 AM EDT

I planted 2 oriental poppies this spring. They were doing well but now on one plant the flower buds have come out but are turning black and some leaves are beginning to brown. The other plant is doing better but a new plant bud is struggling and is curled under.

We would like to have more information.  Please send us photos of the whole plant, affected foliage,  and buds so we can see what you are dealing with.

The images are of the most severely affected poppy.  The other plant has no buds and just a few leaves affected. But it too is starting to look saggy.

Unfortunately we cannot determine exactly which pathogen has caused this damage, though once symptomatic, control with fungicides would not be effective. The relatively cool, wet weather this past spring were probably ideal conditions for infection; it exacerbated other fungal disease outbreaks we have seen thus far. Since poppies die back naturally in hot weather, they will soon be going dormant and no treatment is recommended. For now, you can certainly trim off any blackened growth and dispose of it.
