Looking for a no grow, no mow, low water grass for lawn #652278

Asked June 17, 2020, 2:17 PM EDT

Hi,
My goal is to replace our Kentucky Blue Grass lawn and plant a grass that's no or low grow, no mow with low water requirements. I've heard of a grass, which I believe is called Dog or Puppy Grass.  Our home is in a wild-land urban interface with poor soils and am looking to get rid of our Kentucky Blue Grass, which requires lots of watered to keep green as my husband likes.  Do you have any information on this type of grass and where I might purchase it? Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Terri

Expert Response

Hi Terri,

Thank you for your question about a Dog or Puppy Grass which is easy to maintain. There is a Plant Select grass called Dog Tuff Grass.

https://plantselect.org/learn/dog-tuff-grass-everything-you-need-to-know/

This type of grass has been reported to be hard to control if it grows out of its area.

"This Cynodon selection (Cynodon ‘PWIN04S’) is derived from African grasses similar to American buffalo grass but holds up better to wear and tear. It is a sterile hybrid so it can’t reseed into the wild environment and become an invasive weed (although it could get into your neighbor’s yard via runners!)"

I have attached an article from CO-Horts Blog, written by Tony Koski, which provides more information about this grass, positive and negative..
