Question about garden arthropod #651977

Asked June 16, 2020, 9:08 PM EDT

I am attaching an image of several arthropods I have been seeing in my vegetable garden. My hand shears are there for scale. They appear where I find slugs so not sure if they are destructive or just following after slugs, eating detritus left behind. I live 5 mi south of Newport, .25 mi from the coast. Can you tell me what they are and if they are something to be concerned about?

Lincoln County Oregon

Expert Response

Thank you for the image. The creatures in the image are millipedes.

It's likely you see both slugs and millipedes in the same, or similar, places because both prefer a cool, moist environment. Millipedes are there to help clean-up the dead organic material on the soil  surface whereas slugs feed on living plants.
