Confirm ants are field ants #651803

Asked June 16, 2020, 3:04 PM EDT

I have several places in my yard with a lot of ant activity. It is clear the ant colonies are in the ground where it is bare and void of grass or other growth. I’m fairly certain these are field ants but would like to confirm to before beginning any mitigation. I have attached a few pictures of an ant that will hopefully be good enough to aid in identification. I would guess the ant in the photo is about 1/4” in length. Thank you for your help!

Expert Response

I did check with the expert at the University and your identification is correct.  They are field ants.  However, he said it is not recommended that you try to eliminate nests unless there is one in a particularly troublesome location.
