defoliation of Amelanchier #650851

Asked June 14, 2020, 3:57 PM EDT

I have an Amelanchier that will leaf out in the spring and flower, then as the summer progresses the leaves turn yellow and fall so that by fall the plant is mostly bare. This happens every year. The plant gets full sun for most of the day and is planted in sandy loam soil. My yard has an irrigation system so the plant does get some water. Not sure if the problem is insect damage or fungus related. I am including three pictures. Thank you in advance. Craig Ashworth

Expert Response

HI Craig.

Thank you for your question. The tree looks great in the pictures. There are a few issues associated with Amelanchier. Here is a great article from Penn State about issues you may want to investigate, specifically watering and soil issues. Be sure to clean up any diseased or sick looking leaves. https://www.pennlive.com/gardening/2013/08/serviceberry_trees_are_yellowi.html#:~:text=Planting%20too%20deeply%2C%20especially%20in,a%20slow%20death%20of%20trees.
