Is this poison oak? #650645

Asked June 14, 2020, 7:22 AM EDT

I got poison something and before I begin pulling weeds again I'd like to know if this is 5 leaf poison oak. I saw it is usually on a vine, but the leaves look the same. This is growing up like a plant not a vine. I will attach photos of the leaves and the plant. Thank you.

Expert Response

Hi - This is not poison oak. This appears to be Canadian blacksnakeroot (Sanicula canadensis). Typically we need to see flowers in order to confirm a plant ID. It looks like your plant is forming buds and will have flowers soon. Canadian blacksnakeroot is a native plant and can be found in most areas of Maryland.  https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/view/2367
