Monkey puzzl tree / Araucaria araucana #650629

Asked June 14, 2020, 3:34 AM EDT

Good morning My monkey puzzl tree is growing from the bottom of the tree in two directions, also some of the branches are going brown. I do have it growing in a very large pot outside.

Thank you for your question. There are several issues that can cause browning of these trees’ branches, including low water, insects and a very few diseases. Without knowing what diseases and insects are in your area, I am afraid the best I can do is refer you to what little we have about the species and it’s care here: http://pss.uvm.edu/pss123/folarauc.html Good luck!

Hi

Is it ok to have two trunks growing from the same root, and what do you recommend on pruning some branches off.

Do you have two trunks on the same root ball (unusual)?  Or do you have two trees planted too closely together?  If so, branch problem could be that neither are getting enough water and/or nutrients.  I suggest you water the plant(s) well, remove them from the pot, and see how many plants are there.  If there are two, separate them, water roots again, and repot each in different containers.  Removing the branches won't solve the problem if there are two plants.  (I can't see the second trunk due to the angle from which photo is taken.)
