Apple tree issues #649647

Asked June 11, 2020, 6:15 PM EDT

Any idea what these yellowish spots are on my apple tree? It was recently planted (3 weeks). These spots are raised , look like little eggs. I planted two trees and they are on only one of them and have just recently showed up within the last few days. They also are covering the majority of the leaves. Please advise on treatment methods too. Please and thank you.

Hello.  This is cedar apple rust and it requires two hosts for its life cycle. If you have eastern red cedar in the vicinity of the apple the 2 types of trees are interacting with this fungus.  A couple strategies would be to remove the cedar or replace the apple with a resistant variety because chemical treatments need to be carefully timed and are often difficult for homeowners.  The fungus can disfigure the fruit if it is meant for eating.

Thank you for your quick response. Is it to late for for a copper fungal treatment? The yellow spots just started.

Yes, in order for treatment to be effective it needs to start earlier when buds are starting to show color.  These treatments have to be done every year.  Please read and follow label directions carefully.
