What fly/insect is this? #649611

Asked June 11, 2020, 5:07 PM EDT

These were hatching in my office today. Got them all out side, ran and got my camera to get pictures. At first I thought they were one of our very small native bees, until I noticed the protrusion on their hind ends. They mostly measured about 1/4", few smaller and few slightly bigger. Must have been about 25 or more. I'm just learning my Macro lens, so best I could get. The pictures turned out a little on the dark side as the green on these flies were lighter, but a little deeper than a metallic green bee.

As you know positive insect identification from photos is difficult as many distinguishing characteristics can only be seen under a microscope. However, I can give you a general idea of an avenue to research further. Look up cuckoo wasp to see if those match your mystery insect. The long protrusion off the abdomen is an ovipositor with which she is able to sneak her eggs into the nests of other wasps or bees.
