Suddenly I have a lot of tiny black bugs in my house, can you provide me some info/solutions? #648858

I have recently been finding a lot of small black bugs in my house. They are small, sesame-seed sized.  Slow moving, Are in all rooms: bathroom, bedrooms, living, kitchen, basement, windowsills.  I am vacuuming them daily.  I took a photo and tried to take a photo of one under my magnifying glass. Black with a tan pattern.  Seem to be some type of beetle - shaped like a beetle.  I want to know what they are, where they nest/feed, how to rid of them, and where they come from?  Thanks

Expert Response

I sent your picture to our Iowa State Extension and Outreach entomologist and he couldn't be sure because of the picture quality. He did have a suggestion for follow-up. The description of beetles throughout the house is consistent with emergence of pea weevil. I suggest the house be checked for infested stored beans, peas or other legumes. The infested beans will be riddled with small holes as shown in this picture.  https://utahpests.usu.edu/schoolipm/images-ou/pest-id-guide/Stored_Products_Pests/Cowpea_Weevil/bean-weevil_clemson-university_bugwood_crop.jpg

If you would like to have the bug identified it can be sent to the Iowa State University Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic.  The cost and description of how to send it in is on their web page.  https://hortnews.extension.iastate.edu/pidc
